Obituary of James Ralph Maddux

Dr. James R. Maddux of Camas, Washington, born February 3, 1941 in Joliet, Illinois, passed away on May 17, 2022 at the age of 81. Dr. Maddux, known by most as “Jim,” was a loving husband, father, and grandfather at the time of his death, and a religious teacher, business leader, author, mentor and coach to many throughout his lifetime. Jim is survived by his wife, Sandra Duffy Maddux; his two children, Tracy Maddux and his wife Donna, and Scott Maddux and his wife Leanda; his three grandchildren, Sarah Maddux, Jarret Hernandez and Jace Hernandez; his sister Linda Myers; his brother David Maddux, his niece and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends. Jim was married to Sandra Maddux (Duffy) on December 22, 1962; they were married for 59 years. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Maddux and Jean Maddux, and by his brothers-in-law, Michael Duffy and Steve Duffy. Jim was an athlete for much of his life, having played football, baseball, basketball, tennis and golf; he was also a gifted vocalist, a talent he would use into his time in the ministry. After graduating from Midwestern Christian College, he went on to obtain a MDiv from The University of Chicago and his PhD from the San Francisco Theological Seminary. Before his retirement in 2005, his career spanned many fields in service to others, including education as a Professor of Theology and Dean of Students; Men’s Basketball Coach; Police Chaplain; Head Pastor at Cy-Fair Christian Church; and as an executive at Healthy Families in Houston, Texas. Throughout his career, there was a common theme – a deep seated caring for others and a desire to see them excel. In retirement, he continued to coach basketball for kids in the Camas area, authored three works of fiction and gave his time in support the native people of the Pacific Northwest. His love of God and his family was evident at all times, and his surviving family each carry with them the legacy of that love. In everything that he did, his family always knew that they came first.
