WILLIAM HENRY SHAFER
William Henry Shafer, a Camas resident, died Wednesday July 21st at home. He was 91. Mr. Shafer was born February 8, 1913 in Chandler, Oklahoma to Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Shafer. William served in the Army during WWII and after his discharge the family settled in Pampa, Texas. He lived there for 58 years. During that time he worked as a gasoline plant operator for an oil refinery, a job he held for over 30 years. He retired from that job in 1978 but continued working as a house painter and in lawn maintenance. He was a master at pitching horseshoes. He loved to read western novels and later watched every western movie that he could. At age 91 he could still name all the presidents of the United States in order.
Mr. Shafer is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and P.D. James of Camas, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law Elzie Lee and Lois Teague of Oklahoma City, Okla.; eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 2003 by his wife of 65 years, Lucille.
Funeral services for William H. Shafer will be Friday July 23rd at 1 PM at Straub?s Funeral Home in Camas. The casket will be open from 9 AM until noon the day of the service. Vault interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver. The family suggest remembrances be made to Liberty Bible Church of the Nazarene, 12401 Salmon Creek, Vancouver, Wash.
